Books to Beat Situational Poverty

My students need lower level books and interactive reading materials in order to close their reading gaps. I am requesting a reading comprehension games library CD-ROM and a complete series of "I Can Read!" books.

My Students

Imagine getting to third grade and discovering that you were only reading at a first or second grade reading level. You are surrounded by texts that are too hard for you! What do you do? Give up...or fight back. The students in my class are determined to fight and reach higher levels.

My students are third graders who are at all different ability levels.

I am the reading teacher and have two classes with 17 students in each class. Most of the students who enter my room are surrounded by situational poverty and do not always have the best supportive environments to reach their full potential. There is a mix of students with and without disabilities and reading abilities that range from kindergarten level readers to third grade readers. Our school is the one with the most poverty in the county. However, my class is a determined group of children who will overcome all obstacles.

My Project

We are desperately seeking first and second grade level books to add to our classroom library. With 22 of my 37 students reading at at K, 1st, or 2nd grade reading level we are quickly running out of books from my own personal collection. I am also requesting an interactive reading skills game to practice our reading skills and technology skills. This game will also be very motivational for them to want to read passages and learn skills that are so important to their success in school. These materials will be an important part of closing the educational gap that these children are facing. These materials will raise their reading levels as well as their skill development. I am requesting a reading comprehension games library CD-ROM and a complete series of "I Can Read!" books.

Please be a part of my students future success stories.

I ask you to help change the lives of 34 amazing students who so desperately deserve these materials in their lives. You have the power of helping the future leaders of America have a chance to compete against other students who are more fortunate. We would be forever grateful for any help you could provide.
