Books Should Be Seen And Not Smelled

My students need 7 contemporary art books, including works by Matisse and Picasso.

Sometimes smells can get in the way of learning! I teach High School Art in a rural, K-12, high need school in upstate NY.

I always knew the art books in my classroom library were old. My classroom library consists of hand me downs from the teacher before me, donations from used book stores, and from garage sale finds. The artistic reproductions in them remain usable (though dog eared) and have served many students for many, many years. It was not until my students began complaining that the books smelled like vomit that I was able to see (and smell) just how badly my classroom library needed some freshening! As studying and researching specific works of art and artists are an integral part of my curriculum, I am concerned that the state of my books are getting in the way of learning!

I would like to begin my new classroom library by purchasing books about several contemporary artists. Most High School kids are naturally drawn to contemporary artists -I have found that contemporary art serves as a great introduction to the arts which leads to further interest in other art genres. I have chosen books with many reproductions. These books will be well used and the reproductions in them, well loved.

As we live in a rural area, the closest museum is hours away. Yearly, we take a museum field trip, paid for by their Art Club fundraisers. Though they come away from the field trip with enthusiasm, I depend on books and artistic reproductions to help foster an appreciation of the arts that will stay with them long after graduation.
