My Students

Statistics show that students who are poor readers at the end of first grade almost never acquire average level reading skill by the end of elementary school. Therefore, our kindergarten classroom goal is for all students to be reading on a first grade reading level by the end of the school year.

My students face many challenges that affect their ability to get ahead by reading.

Since our school is 99% free lunch, many of my students worry about what they will eat over a long weekend. Despite these hardships, my students are motivated to read on first grade reading levels and therefore, make at least two years growth in reading. Our visual classroom reading tracker has displayed urgency in my scholars, who know that reading places them on the pathway to college and after attending college, they can be whatever they aspire to be. One might find holding these high expectations for students living in high poverty and a violence stricken area unrealistic. However, my students have risen to these high expectations and despite their hardships, are all already reading on at least an "A" reading level. They are determined that by the end of the school year, they can continue to move up and beat the odds that are against them.

My Project

This leveled readers library is a great way for my students to easily identify which books they should be reading independently. Since there is such a diversity of reading levels in our classroom, students will easily be able to identify the book bin labeled their own reading level. For example, if a student is on a reading level "B," they will easily be able to identify the book bin labeled B, and choose from those books. This way, students are gaining confidence in reading, and not becoming frustrated searching for books on their level. Since our class goal is for all students to read on a level G, students will also be able to glance at what reading level they are striving for.

My students' chance at betting the odds and going to college starts now at the precious age of 5.

Their ability to read will determine their academic achievement of the future. This project is grounded in high expectations and big goals that our students need to succeed. With these extra resources, my students will not only read on grade level, but above. They deserve this, because all students deserve high expectations and an excellent education.
