My students face many challenges that affect their ability to get ahead by reading. Since our school is 99% free lunch, many of my students worry about what they will eat over a long weekend. Despite these hardships, my students are motivated to read on first grade reading levels and therefore, make at least two years growth in reading. Our visual classroom reading tracker has displayed urgency in my scholars, who know that reading places them on the pathway to college and after attending college, they can be whatever they aspire to be. One might find holding these high expectations for students living in high poverty and a violence stricken area unrealistic. However, my students have risen to these high expectations and despite their hardships, are all already reading on at least an "A" reading level. They are determined that by the end of the school year, they can continue to move up and beat the odds that are against them.
