My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Now due to a lack of funding, our school is closing our library before many of my students discover the joy of reading.

My fifty students are full of potential and ready to learn.

By the end of middle school, students should be reading for knowledge, but in my two 8th grade classrooms alone, student reading levels range from 3rd to 10th grade. Though many are voracious readers, devouring book after book, most of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imagination and inspire them to keep reading. Our team is working to help these students learn and develop into capable adults, but the school lacks the resources to provide a library. After several years of cuts, they are closing the doors. Half of my students walk to school. The other half take the bus. All of them live in what is designated as "high poverty" and have been under-served in education their entire lives. They are curious. They are tough. And most importantly, they are ready to read.

My Project

My students need books to fall in love with reading and raise their reading levels to be competitive with their grade-level peers. Research shows that students need 60 minutes of reading per day to improve their reading level by one year in a school year. We will provide the time and support each day, but need to fill a classroom library with options to engage our students. By donating to our classroom, you will help purchase works of high interest and canon, fiction and non-fiction, both on and below grade level, so that every reader will find their starting point.

As our school library doors close, so too does my students' access to greater opportunities.
