My Students

There is nothing so completely uplifting than watching five, six, and seven year-olds check out library books. It's like they have won the lottery. The flip side to that is when they lose or damage a book, they are beyond distraught and we all feel like crying.

Children love the library.

It is like a candy store for them. They get to come in and choose from thousands of titles. For many students this is the first time they have ever checked out a book. Besides reading delightful stories and interacting with technology I spend time working with students on book care. I don't think for one minute students intentionally mean to damage books or lose them, but that happens. It is so stressful for them and it breaks my heart because the students are truly sorry about losing and or damaging the books. So book bags are an excellent way for students to keep track of their books and keep them from getting damaged.

My Project

A book bag is an excellent tool for students to use and it sends a message that books are an important resource and need to be taken care. The younger students are particularly worried about damaging and or losing books so they will sometimes decide to not check out books for fear of having to pay for them. Book bags will give them the confidence to check out books and take good care of them.

In an era of massive budget cuts every dime is important.

Books are expensive to purchase. So not having to use my library budget for book bags will leave more money for books. Being able to purchase new books instead of replacing lost or damaged books will be much more fun for the children here!
