My Students

Reading opens many doors. My class goes on daily adventures through reading books. To become a better reader, one must read. Books 4 Girls will allow girls to join together to read and discuss books.

My students are amazing!

They work so hard, while so many have so little. Over 50% of our student body receives free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch daily. We also have a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program, which provides the students with a healthy snack 3 mornings a week. Not only is our school economically diverse, we are also very diverse nationality wise. Despite being a melting pot, our students work extremely well together and support one another. It is a joy to teach in this amazing school!

My Project

Recently, my 'Books 4 Boys' DonorsChoose project was funded. It has been such a success. The boys have enjoyed it! The girls got upset that they were being left out. Now I am working to raise money to kick off a 'Books 4 Girls' program. This will run during recess and be open to girls in grades 4-5-6. We take turns reading and discussing a book. The groups change per book. A child can sign up again, but signing up means they are committing to the book. This helps them with not only reading, but staying dedicated to a task. My students need books including The Secret Garden, The Diary of Anne Frank and The Mighty Miss Malone.

It has been proved that 'Books 4 Boys' is successful.

I expect the same out of the girls. The level of engagement and the sense of belonging to a club helps increase self-confidence, self-esteem, and learning. The students are becoming more fluent readers. They are more confident in speaking out in class after spending time reading aloud in our group. They are also on their way to becoming life long readers. It's win-win!
