My students need books, including Hollywood, Dead Ahead, Til Death Do Us Bark, The Phantom of the Post Office and more, for book club groups. They need books that are fun and that we can discuss.
My classroom is the school Media Center. A typical day is not very typical. Students are in and out all day, there are lots of classes going on. Many students ask for reading suggestions. As a teacher, I am pulled in many fun, crazy directions at once. It's a great place to be a teacher librarian!
Our school is a community.
Even before my children attended this school, I had heard that it is a great community. It's true; we work hard but we always work together. It's the "best kept secret in the county", although we're not much of a secret anymore. Our students perform above and beyond their expectations every day. They are always happy, always willing to help others, and they work very hard.
As a community, we work hard to support each other. We work together, we collaborate, and we work to support the students as best we can. In return, we have great students. They do for each other as we, the teachers, do for them.
Although we are a tight-knit community, we do not have a lot of funding. We have what comes from the state, and our PTA works hard for us, but we do not have a foundation to support us. We are in a middle income area; parents have enough to support their children, but they don't have much more. Funding this book club would mean the world to our students.
My Project
We need books, including Hollywood, Dead Ahead, Til Death Do Us Bark, The Phantom of the Post Office and more, for book club groups. With the items requested, I will host a series of book clubs for 4th and 5th grade students, which will increase their level of comprehension. Our test scores for media information/literacy need to increase; I fully believe that having small groups of students work with me in books clubs will make those high test scores happen.
I have requested one book for 5th graders with which we will do some STEM projects. My goal is to collaborate with other teachers to ensure that STEM projects happen because of this book. I have requested enough books to cover more than one book group.
With the other set(s) of books, we will utilize reading group questions, have discussions, and let students work on group projects that showcase their knowledge of the titles. Working in small groups will allow the students to really show what they know. They will learn how to work together, how to create a common goal and how to achieve.
I have already started small group book discussion with some students.
If funded, this project will allow me to grow the program. Currently, I borrow books from other school media centers in order to have enough for each student in my group. If funded, I will be able to have enough books here at my local library for each child to read and return them. My hope is to secure the love of lifelong learning and reading within each child who is a member of my book groups.
