Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What could be better than Book Clubs for providing emergent readers with authentic situations to discuss books with their peers?
My students are an enthusiastic and diverse group of Second Graders!
They are voracious readers, who look forward for their individualized daily reading time. We are a New Jersey K-4 School in a high-poverty area. Many of these boys and girls enter school with very little language skills. I actually teach in the town where I grew up, and hope to instill in them the love of education that my teachers taught me.
My Project
This year, I started adding Book Clubs to our Daily Reader's Workshop time. Students have had non-fiction book clubs where they would all research a topic(using books on their own level), then meet together to discuss new and exciting things they learned. We also started Favorite Series Book Clubs, where students would share together their thoughts on characters such as Henry and Mudge, Cam Jansen, and Curious George. I have found that just the WORD "club," suddenly made reading seem cool and exclusive! My students' stamina and engagement has increased greatly due to the introduction of book clubs. BUT, I can only go so far with the limited supply of books that I have. I am trying to have Book Series and Non-fiction books to meet all the levels in my room. I have students reading at Kindergarten levels, as well as students reading at Fourth grade levels. As you can imagine, this presents quite a challenge!
If you decide to donate to this project, you will be putting quality literature in the hands of children who really need it!
You will encourage a scholarly climate and a sense of community in my classroom for years to come! Your donation would means so much to my students and I!
