How do you tell scholars who are eager to share that they cannot? That is my challenge every day, because we simply do not have the resources to quickly and effectively present group work given our rigorous and accelerated curriculum.

Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." -Howard Thurman This simple challenge is how my students and I operate on a daily basis. For my students, living in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood presents some unique challenges to their lives. However, we take pride in the challenges we face and celebrate them because we know that challenges produce perseverance, character, and hope for the future.

My Project

This document camera would allow my students to become a more integral part of the classroom and instruction. Currently, we are using group work to drive small group instruction, but we are unable to quickly and effectively collaborate as a class because it takes too long for groups to share their work. My problem is that I have a Smart Board projector that only allows one group at a time to share their work, which is difficult to execute when you have 5 to 6 small groups needing to present. With this document camera, we would be able to quickly and easily share our findings with the class, since each group would be able to bring their paper to the camera and instantly show the class their work. This would revolutionize my class, since students would have the opportunity to teach lessons to their peers. It will raise the level of engagement in my classroom to a whole new level, while improving my students' communication and oral presentation skills.

Why do you prepare to be excellent when the world around you is full of mediocrity?

This is the question facing my students every day as inner city youth. For us, becoming excellent is not encouraged, it is the expectation. Going to college is not a choice of do I want to or not, it is a choice of life or death. My students are pushed to meet excellence so that they will graduate from college.
