My students need a listening center, CD player and leveled books to help them in learning to read, as I differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of each student.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
OH, the Places You'll Go! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
Dr. Seuss
This is the dream I have for my 19 1st Graders. Reading will open a whole new world them. We are ready!
I have 19 students in my classroom, 13 boys and 6 girls.
50% of my students are Hispanic and 50% are African American. I work at a public elementary school. It is a Title 1 school and 94% of the students are classified as economically disadvantaged. The district where I work has identified our school as a low performing school. However, I agree with the core beliefs that my school has adopted:
*Our main purpose is to improve student academic achievement
*Effective instruction makes the most difference in student academic performance.
*There is no excuse for poor quality instruction.
*With my help, at risk students will achieve at the same rate as non-at risk students.
*I must have a commitment to children and a commitment to the pursuit of excellence.
These statements are a picture of me and what I am striving for in my classroom. I begin instruction with a clear view of how I want my first graders to look at the end of the year. I work towards this goal with eagerly.
My Project
As you can see, I have asked for a Listening Center. The listening center will benefit my students in these ways:
1. Each student will receive practice at his/her skill level (reading, phonics, comprehension skills). Students will be rotated to use this center daily.
2. Model how good readers read (intonation, fluency, etc.)
3. Record student's own reading for self assessment
4. Foster independence
5. Build good listening skills
6. Build sight vocabulary
7. Compliment content curriculum
8. Provide exposure to a variety of genres
I have not been extravagant in asking for both the cassette and Cd models of recorders/players. The materials I use require both of the models and having both will allow for more student access.
The books that I have requested will allow my students to read at their own level thus improving their literacy skills, encouraging their development of higher-level thinking skills, and creating a classroom library of books that all my students can read.
Donations to Blossoming Readers will help in several ways:
1.
The listening center will compliment the curriculum that I am using in the classroom.
2. The books will compliment and supplement the curriculum that I am using by providing my students with a library of books that they can read.
3. Both the listening center and the books will help to create in students a love for reading and lead them to becoming life long learners. And, "Oh the Places They Will Go."
