My Students

"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."(Dr. Seuss) It is my goal to provide books that take students out of this world and into our amazing solar system. I want them to be inspired by the real life stories of space exploration.

The library serves a diverse population of approximately 360 students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.

Thirty two percent of the students are on free and reduced lunch. Due to budget cuts the school has not had a full time librarian in five years and no librarian the last two years. Most of the nonfiction books are out-of-date and do not appeal to junior high students. I was hired as the librarian September of 2013. The students have been appreciative and receptive to library programs that were initiated this school year.

My Project

The state mandated curriculum says that junior high students should develop an understanding of Earth as part of our solar system and gain knowledge of space exploration. These books will support the curriculum by providing students with current and useful information. Students will be able to use these books as a reliable source in writing research papers. Students are required to have written sources as will as Internet sources by their teachers. Students will be able to view the library as a relevant part of their education. Not only will these books meet curriculum goals, but they will meet the interest levels of those students fascinated by space. By making a display to promote the books, more students will be attracted to explore the "Final Frontier".

In getting the library back on track, the emphasis this year has been on fiction.

This project is the first step in developing an up-to-date nonfiction collection that will meet the needs of the students. Research has shown that a viable school library contributes to the academic success of students and increases their scores on class and state assessments.
