Do you remember your favorite children's story? Now...imagine it BIGGER! My students are energetic and enthusiastic students with developing fine motor skills. Big books will make it easier for my students to explore exciting illustrations and print.
My students are positive, enthusiastic, and full of eagerness to learn.
Reading is by far their favorite subject. Their excitement grows even further when I pull out the few big books that I currently have. My students attend Richard Allen, a charter school in inner city Dayton where resources are scarce. We currently have only 3 big books in our classroom, which were purchased or donated by garage sales. My students are always pulling them out from behind the bookshelf to explore them together.
My Project
These big books will create a new excitement for reading in our classroom. No one will ever forget seeing a child's eyes light up when their favorite story is now at least three times its size! These big books will give my students the opportunity to explore their favorite text in the real book, not in sentences written on strips. Students will be able to learn adjectives, reading skills, comprehension skill, and most important the fun of reading through use of these book.
The storage rack will also help my students become more excited about these books. I will no longer have to hide them behind my bookshelf, where they tend to find them anyway. Instead, they will be in view where the children can easily access them and read together. This rack will not only make the environment more safe, but even more kid friendly. Speaking as a teacher who doesn't even have a teacher desk in my classroom, I understand the importance of everything being at the students level.
This project is so important because it will not only impact my students now, but for the longevity of their education.
Big books have a mystical wonder for students that immediately engages them. These big books will give my students the opportunity to learn a multitude of reading skills and strategies in a book that is easy for them to see and find print. These big books give us the ability to interact with print and instill a life long excitement in learning that can never be taken away.
