My Students

Coaching baseball at an "at risk" inner-city high school is challenging enough but now that the bat requirements have changed, getting "premier" bats to compete with local schools becomes almost impossible.

We have a small but dedicated group of young men who are trying to enjoy and play the game of baseball.

They come to practice everyday and give their best. Even though our baseball field is the worst in the league, we've gotten help from local yard cutting people to maintain a decent standard. The kids have also raised a little money but that gets them baseball pants, cleats and an inexpensive glove. We have older bats for practice but with the new standards, we have to buy two new bats, a 32" and a 33" bat. All the other schools have kids that each buy their own bat, we can't even afford to buy one in each size for the entire team. Our school is in a depressed area and we are an "at risk" inner-city high school. Our student population is 95% African-American. I recently purchased cleats and a pair of baseball pants for a young freshman who couldn't afford it.

My Project

The kids would be so excited to get these new bats because it would mean that we could compete on the same level as the other, more affluent, schools in our league. My kids always feel like they are at disadvantage because we don't have as nice a field, as nice equipment or as nice of uniforms as our opponents. But they don't let that stop them from working in the off season, coming everyday or giving all that they have to compete. It would be thrilling to put together equipment this year that could change their frame of mind, from always being behind to competing as equals.

Baseball is America's game, a game of concentration, skill, dedication, individual responsibility played within the framework of a team atmosphere.

But the price of equipment, especially bats, makes it difficult to really compete on an equal footing. These bats could change the entire complexion of our season.
