My Students

Play helps children develop physically, mentally and socially. It relieves them from the intense mental rigors of the education process and allows them to come back refreshed for more. Our students need help making our playground more inviting! I believe a giant game board and pieces would help!

My students are the youngest at an intermediate school (approximately 350 5th through 8th graders).

There aren't a lot of appealing activities on the playground for them during their recesses. They NEED to be outside, socializing and getting a break, but some beg to stay inside at recess. We are in a rural community and as you can see from the picture, the playground is not a top priority, so the children often struggle with finding things to do.

My Project

A team of us are trying to get the lines repainted and basket ball hoops added in. It's my belief that a giant chess game painted on the blacktop would brighten things up a bit and entice children to come play. The problem is, we would need the giant chess pieces to get them to enjoy the game OUTSIDE! By having an outdoor chess set, the children will get fresh air, get into a new environment, socialize, be interactive, as well as learn strategy, team work and problem solving!

I believe that a giant game of chess will appeal to a portion of students who are often overlooked on a playground.
