This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Laboratory activities are what make science come alive! They account for many of our most memorable classroom experiences.

My students are a remarkable group of 10th, 11th and 12th graders at an inner-city school in Washington DC.

My school caters to students from all over our Nation's Capital. Learners in my class come from a variety of backgrounds, many of them are bilingual. Often times it is the students who are teaching me. This helps make going into school every day a joy. Despite the minority and low-income status of the majority of our students, our school is dedicated to preparing all of our students to go to college. Many of my students are learning English as a second language and most need to hands-on experience with the content in order to be ready to take on college level work.

My Project

The digital balances will afford students the opportunity to navigate a complex lab curricula with efficiency and precision. Most life science, and all physical science labs require the taking of precise masses. Schools in urban settings are renown for their lack of technology in science labs. Balancing budgets is always difficult. Trying to acquire these materials, and still have money left over for everything else our department needs, is nearly impossible.

Science and technology have walked hand-in-hand for ages.

These resources will digitally record lab data and give students the ability to statistically analyze the information. This will no doubt lead to an enhanced understanding of the content.
