Aspiring Sparks: Tech Needed to Launch Inaugural Lit. Mag.

My students need two laptop computers for multiple purposes, including document processing and web 2.0 apps. Additionally, the writing club needs a printer and ink.

My Students

It is my dream that my students in this coming school year are able to feel confident in their reading and writing skills. Most especially, it is my goal that our creative writing club can finally produce a quality literary magazine and be able to preview their work in print.

My students come from extreme ends of the social spectrum.

Primarily, my students are on free or reduced lunch. I work at a Title 1 school. The majority of my students have limited access to computers and the Internet at home, if at all. Our magnet program receives much of the technology funding. The rest of the school is a hodgepodge of dilapidated resources, some of which is as old as when I was personally in middle school. My projector is dying and there are no promises of when, or even if, it will be replaced. For 2 years, I have been desperate to have even a few computers for students to use just for homework access and word processing. My writing club struggled in their inaugural year to produce a magazine when there was only my teacher desktop and my personal laptop to use in class. Due to the constant standardized testing, our laptop carts are always in use.

My Project

Even with just the two requested computers, the possibilities are endless not only for my writing club but for my ELA classes as well. Club members can process magazine submissions under my supervision and begin assembling pages to go to print. A printer (with ink) for student access in the room will be used to preview pages and help students truly visualize their efforts in physical form. For my ELA (English Language Arts) classes, I will set up centers for teams of students to access web 2.0 applications, including Voice Thread, Flashcard Stash, and more. It is my anticipation that the following skills, in addition to others, will be enhanced: - typing skills - spelling - grammar - reading comprehension - vocabulary - text features - reading fluency - media literacy

Other departments who have managed to have technology donations have seen huge surges in student engagement.

Having Internet-accessible computers in my classroom will make a difference particularly for students who do not have the same access at home. These are the students who seem to struggle the most with ELA, as they do not have the same level of support as their more affluent peers. My writing club students also need technology so I can best foster their love of writing for adulthood.
