My Students

As a literature teacher, I want to inspire the critical thinking skills of my students, while also supporting their love of reading. My students love visual texts, including manga, graphic novels, and art books, and I am eager to bring them these books in the context of our literature classes.

Our students are scholars who take their studies seriously, and book lovers who take full advantage of their school and classroom libraries.

This is a school of rich cultural diversity, talent, ambition, creativity, and unique people who march to the beat of their own drums. I want to encourage and support my students' pursuit of knowledge, independent curiosity and love of reading.

My Project

I am working with the school library to create a diverse collection of Asian visual and creative texts, including manga, graphic travelogues and histories, art books and novels. From a Japanese manga take on Victorian England, to an outsider's unique experience in North Korea, to an exploration of the new art worlds of Asia, these books I am requesting will inspire my students' critical thinking skills, broaden their horizons, and satisfy their extracurricular reading interests. The books will be used as part of my Japanese Literature class, and will then become available to the entire school community through the library.

Visual texts inspire curiosity, imagination and wonder.

However, budget cuts make it harder than ever to offer education that isn't cookie-cutter. Thank you for contributing to a project that encourages diverse literary opportunities for our students.
