ASAP: Awesome Supplies for Advanced Placement!

My students need 3 cameras and 2 computers in the art room in order to take photos and upload the images of their AP portfolio artworks.

My Students

Change AP statistics ASAP! Did you know that minorities are less likely to take AP courses than their white counterparts? At our school, we have bridged that gap by enrolling a majority of our students in at least 1 AP course before or by their junior year. However, the challenge does not end here.

A 2010 College Board study found that out "of the half million students who took and passed an AP exam in 2010, only 14.6 percent were Hispanic or Latino.

Only 3.9 percent were black".(http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/13/ap-exams-most-students-wh_n_1273980.html) Our school's student population is made up of 90% minority students (60% African-American and 30% Hispanic/Latino)and 90% of the students/families are living at the poverty level. Consequently, the challenges the students face are doubled when it comes to taking AP courses and passing them, even though taking these courses has been proven to better prepare students for college. Obviously, when students are better prepared for college they are less likely to drop out and more able to gain a college degree. Getting students to college has to be our goal as educators and should be our goal as citizens. ALL students deserve a chance to earn a college degree.

My Project

As an art teacher and Fine Arts Chairperson, it is vital that the courses offered challenge students at the highest levels possible. Currently, there are 3 studio art AP courses available through the College Board. However, these classes are expensive and many of the requirements put forth by the College Board assume that all students have access to digital cameras and computers at home in which they can photograph and upload their images independently. This is not the case with many of my students. The lack of resources at home coupled with the deficit the district I work for is currently in has threatened to hinder my students in completing their AP Studio Art exam/portfolio. I refuse to accept this.

In order to change the status quo and alter the alarming statistics surrounding AP opportunities and minority students, we have to provide the resources needed.

For my class, this means equipment in the art room that they can use during class and after school to take photographs of their wonderful artworks and upload these images to their individual digital portfolios via a computer. Please help change my students chances of being successful in high school AND in college ... ASAP!
