Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Let us introduce ourselves. We are a first grade class of 12 boys and 13 girls. We proudly celebrate our Hispanic and European heritages. We have an additional special friend that joins us from the severe and profound room during science and social studies.

Last Thursday, our listening center started making awful clanking and clattering noises. We couldn't listen to our story anymore! The teacher tried to have it fixed, but the man said it was "too old and beyond repair."

In our listening center, we gather in small groups of 4-5. We put on our headphones (so as not to bother our friends doing other centers). We grab the book the teacher has chosen for us and listen to a tape of the story while we look at the pictures and turn the pages. Next, we take a paper and draw a picture of our favorite part, list words from the book that we already know (we're so smart!) and mark if we liked the book a lot, kind of, or not at all. Our teacher says this helps us to become better readers -- we hear a really good reader reading, and we begin to follow along, we look for words we know, and we decide if we like a certain kind of story or not. If we could get a new CD/cassette player, we could quit listening to our stories on our teacher's battery-operated cassette player and get back to listening quietly with headphones!
