Help us discover the world we cannot see with our own eyes! Enhance students' experiences through forensic investigation and comparison of living cells and tissues.
My students have been given a second chance; for many of them it may be their last.
I work with urban high school students who are at risk for not graduating. For a wide variety of reasons - personal, economic, and social - they have not been successful in school. I am blessed to work with these students who prove to me every day that people who have experienced extreme disadvantage are still excitable, intelligent, and persistent. These students have been bullied, joined gangs, and lived in poverty; yet they continually demonstrate that they can overcome their pasts and strive to become mature, responsible young adults prepared to enter college and the work force.
By having a small set of basic microscopes in the science classroom, I will be able to convert lessons into experiences. People learn by doing, and my students will be able to view a variety of things with the aid of a microscope. We will be able to compare and contrast different types of cells, analyze evidence in forensic investigations, and explore the anatomy of the flowers we grow in our garden. They will be empowered by their investigative skills - questioning, comparing, inferring, analyzing, concluding - and will take these skills into the real world where they can take active roles in their careers and their communities.
As with all students, my students not only deserve, but need, opportunities for meaningful learning.
Each of them has made the decision to give their education another chance, to earn a high school diploma, and avoid becoming another urban school statistic. A well-rounded background in science includes using and understanding technology as well as developing strong critical thinking skills. The infusion of microscopes into our lessons will enhance my students' experiences in science.
