The classroom is very different from when you and I were in school. Today technology is a necessary tool for a successful classroom. Technology assists in teaching lessons and reinforces learning activities in all subject areas. It is essential that we get an Apple computer for the classroom.
I teach a fifth grade ELL class in a Title I and Title III school, which means we are a high poverty school with a large ELL population.
Over 85% of the families in the school come from another country and speak a language other than English at home. My students' diversity brings so much to the classroom and it is a great opportunity to learn from one another. I feel truly honored to teach students who are enthusiastic, caring, and eager to learn each day.
My Project
In my fifth grade ELL class technology specifically aids in teaching students English. We only have one computer in the classroom, which we all share. Most of the time that laptop is connected to the SmartBoard in order to project lessons, therefore individual students are unable to use it. My school has purchased a program called Imagine Learning. This child-friendly, Rosetta Stone-like program teaches students English through games, songs, and videos. My students don't get to use the program because we don't have another computer in the classroom. In addition, 95% of my students do not have a computer at home.
With a MacBook, students would get the opportunity to use the Imagine Learning software on a daily basis. Students could play online math games to reinforce skills and much more. In science and social studies the MacBook will allow my students to do research and aide with their written reports. With the MacBook, the world is just a click away.
I am also requesting the Apple Care Protection Plan as well as a power chord for the MacBook.
A MacBook is a big investment, but it is an investment that will impact the lives of my students for many years to come.
Currently, there is no funding available to provide this tool for my students, and many students do not have access to a computer at home. I want them to have access to this laptop so that they can learn new things, stay excited about learning, and become lifelong learners. Please help my class and I to have an Apple to share!
