An Apple for the Teacher

My students need iPad accessories for our classroom so that I can fully utilize our new school iPad as a teaching and learning tool.

My Students

Becoming technologically literate will open up a world of possibilities for my urban students. 21st century students need to use 21st century technology as they learn the skills that are valued in our growing global society.

Located in a large urban high school, my students are part of a smaller learning community that is focused on interdisciplinary learning and integrating global issues within the curriculum.

Our program is open to all students, regardless of their background or prior learning, so this is not a magnet program. Within my classroom, students have different exposure to technology. At one end of the spectrum are students with a cell phone attached to their hand and a laptop in their backpack and at the other end are students who must use the library computer at lunch or after school because they don't have Internet access at home.

My Project

My school has provided one iPad for use within my classroom, but our class needs the accessories to make it more teacher and student usable. With access to resources like an Apple TV system and a video adapter, I will be able to project information from the iPad directly to my projector. I could sit with the students as we work on activities together and even pass the iPad to students so they can use it to demonstrate their learning to their classmates from anywhere in the room. In addition, both my students and I could more easily prepare class presentation by inputting large amounts of data with a keyboard or uploading pictures from a digital camera with an adapter. As more and more educational applications are developed, the iPad will become even more useful in the classroom. Being able to more safely use the iPad to improve student learning and increase teacher productivity will make a big difference in my classroom.

My project has two goals.

First, all of my students will become more proficient in using technology in their day-to-day learning, which is especially important for the students who are not exposed to technology at home. Second, if my school sees that my students and I are using technology appropriately and consistently in the classroom, they will hopefully see the benefit in expanding access to all the teachers and students at our school.
