My Students

For adolescence the big three- Computers, the future and self are about the most engaging topics around. My class Computers and Careers focuses on understanding yourself, looking at opportunities for the future and creating projects using technology. What could be better?

This is a class of Champions.

They are 13 and 14 year old who want to stand out. They see injustice in the world and community and want to make a difference for those without a voice. These are the kids who have marched on the state capitol, participated in Spoken Word festivals and have the largest Gender/Sexuality Alliance group in the school district. Some of the kids are rich, most are middle class and quite a few are, or have been, homeless. They believe in their power to make the world a better place. This is a good thing considering the school they attend. While our mascot is a tiger, it should be an organic apple. Not flashy, not big, maybe even not outwardly beautiful, but the right thing to eat- both for the body and the environment. That is the style of the school where these kids are the leaders.

My Project

The inexpensive mobile phones will be used a handheld WI-FI devices. In this project, the TracPhones will be used to beta test app function on an actual device. So, what's the app? Students in the Computers/Careers class will be collaborating with the Gender/Sexuality Alliance club to create an app for students using MIT's AppInventor. This activity is called Make it Better and is a resource connecting adolescents and young adults with Gender and Sexuality support agencies in the city and county. Students creating the app will learn how to create an app for an android operating system. They will learn how to develop products to meet client needs. Finally, the app developers and the GSA club members will learn about the community resources available to adolescents and young adults with questions about gender and sexuality. These devices will also be available for check out from the library for classroom use requiring hand held devices- including cameras, video, and any WI-FI apps.

Access to handheld devices will help students create apps with better interface and a higher quality experience for users.

The Make it Better app will help the intended audience of teens struggling with questions about gender and sexuality connect with resources, literally, at their finger tips. Following product development will be product distribution. It is the intent of the kids in the GSA group to share the app with other GSA groups in the district middle and high schools.
