Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

No one likes to sit still in one chair or position for long periods of time without being able to move around, least of all my group of active third graders.

The students at my elementary school come from a low socioeconomic community.

Many of the students at this school are learning English as a second language. My school is a Title 1 school which means that 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My Project

Being a student today is hard. Due to the advent of standardized testing, there is a huge focus on maximizing instructional time. Breaks and transition times are basically nonexistent in today's classroom. My young students, especially my active ones, find it very difficult to stay focused throughout the day if they have to stay seated and still in their chair all day. I will use these alternative seating options to give students a way to move and be active without causing disruptions during instruction. I hope to see more focused and engaged students making learning gains.

Giving students fun and active options in the classroom will greatly increase focus and decrease disruptive behavior.

Research shows that student engagement and focus increases if they are given an outlet for their excess energy. With these materials(stability ball chairs and wobble cushions, and bouncy bands), students will be able to move and be active without losing any valuable lesson time. My students already get excited about leaving their seats, even if it is only to sit on the floor. They would be ecstatic to have a variety of options each day!
