All aBOARD to Learning: Destination Music Class Whiteboard!

My students need a portable whiteboard that has both a blank side and a side with a musical staff.

My Students

As the music teacher, I do not have my own classroom, but rather go room to room in the students' homeroom classrooms, as well as teaching in the library. My biggest challenge is making sure my students feel comfortable and confident when they are in my class, since the space I teach in is shared.

Ambitious.

Quirky. Diligent. Funny. Bright. Go-Getter's. Leaders. Peace-seekers. Inquisitive. Unique. Decatur is a small, close-knit community of motivated students, teachers, parents, and faculty. Teachers make efforts to engage not only their students, but often involve themselves in interdisciplinary learning endeavors to better the school as a whole. The students at Decatur do not settle. When my students accomplish a task or have a moment where the light bulb turns on they do not stop there, but rather ask even more questions to push the envelope of learning even further. At this school the learning goes both ways. Students work both independently and collaboratively and learn from the teachers, as well as each other. To be honest, the students at this school are very mature for their age, but they are still kids! They work hard, but I've never seen them smile harder than when they get an extra recess period or it is pizza day for lunch.

My Project

At Decatur we do not have a cafeteria, gym, auditorium, or music room. While the small space is certainly part of the charm of this school, it also does present serious limitations when it comes to developing the best possible learning environment for students and teachers. I teach sometimes in student classrooms and other times in the library. The library also houses the Latin teacher and the literacy teacher. Currently, our library is just that--a library. It is not set up to be a classroom and consequently there is no whiteboard or any place to write. Having a whiteboard is such an essential when it comes to teaching, and is especially important for meeting the needs of different types of learning styles, specifically those who learn through visual stimuli.

The donation of this whiteboard will serve to enhance student learning by providing greater flexibility in the classroom as well as creating more coherent instruction.

Students will be able to use this whiteboard not only in music class, but in other classes in the library as well. Students will benefit not only from the donation itself, but I plan to discuss with my classes how giving back and the act of charity is what gives beauty to the world.
