My students need a class set of Muggie Maggie and cursive books for reading about and writing in cursive.

My Students

"I can't read this...it's in CURSIVE!!!" I can't tell you how many times I've heard that this year! The majority of my third graders have had little to no exposure to cursive handwriting...it's my job to help change that!

I teach in a school where the children come from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and socioeconomic situations.

The majority of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, which means their families are struggling financially. Each year I typically have a few students with learning disabilities and speech needs. It is not uncommon to have one third of my students speak English as a second language.

My Project

Learning to write in cursive (and read it!) is not the most exciting lesson in the world, but it's a necessity! I need to make sure that by the time my 3rd graders leave me, they are well-prepared for 4th grade expectations, and that means they must be able to read and write in cursive! I'd like to make this just a little more exciting by tying it in with a novel study about Maggie, a third grader who is incredibly frustrated with learning to write in cursive. By creating a novel study around cursive writing, I believe my students will be more engaged and eager to learn. They'll also have the opportunity to continue to practice their reading skills, which is a plus! The cursive handwriting workbooks I'm requesting will give me a variety of practice pages to share with my students as they learn to write in cursive, just like Beverly Cleary's character, Maggie.

Learning to read and write in cursive is not always fun, but it can be!

These materials will also be able to be reused with each group I teach every year! Thank you so much for helping me make learning cursive exciting and more meaningful for my third graders!
