This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students and I have a motto: "Be Who You Are." It's everywhere in our bandroom. That's because I have a GREAT group of students and I want them to know that it's OK to be who you are...don't worry about being anyone else.
My students range from 7th to 12th graders, from low income, high poverty areas.
We just won 2nd place in a local percussion competition and now are in the middle of football season. A lot of my students are young beginners but you can tell the growth in them as each year goes by. I'm very proud of them.
My Project
I am requesting 8 snare drums, 5 trumpet mouthpieces and 1 refrigerator to store water/food/powerade, etc.
My percussion section grows with each passing year. These new snares will allow the students to perform on quality drums, like they deserve.
I have a lot of beginners that want to learn the trumpet so those mouthpieces will be for students who desire to learn.
We need a refrigerator because we have begun to keep food for the students to eat after they return from performances, or even after school, period.
My drum instructor and myself have to fix the drums daily because the drums are extremely old.
The students need them to play so we fix them.
I have a lot of new students who want to play trumpet so they will be able once they receive a mouthpiece.
We do performances year round, a lot of our students are from poverty-stricken areas. Some don't have the privilege of a good meal when they get home. We like to keep stuff for them to eat so we need a refrigerator/freezer to keep the food fresh.
