My students need 3 djembes to be used in general music class.

This summer I spent 3 weeks in Kopeyia, Ghana studying Ewe dancing, singing, and percussion music. I am excited by the opportunity to bring this music to students this fall. My school has few African instruments. Without your assistance, my students will be playing music on pizza boxes.
I teach general music preK to grade 8 at 2 public schools in Chicago.
One of the schools has a student population that is predominately Hispanic and African American. Eighty three percent of the students are low income, and approximately 30% of the population receives special education services. The other school I teach at is a magnet school with a diverse population, including a large student population of African American students, Asian students, Hispanic students, and white students. The instruments will be shared between both schools.
With these African percussion instruments I will teach students musical skills that I learned during the 3 weeks of study in Kopeyia, Ghana. Students will also sing, dance, and learn about the culture and history of Ghana. Students will learn performance skills on djembes, they will perform West African music as an ensemble using classroom rhythm instruments and the djembes, and they will learn about instrument families using the instrument families. They will learn about musical elements of beat, tempo, dynamics, and polyrhythm. I will personally teach the musical skills, and will supplement the lessons with video of Master Artists that was recorded in Ghana to demonstrate skills and concepts.
I received a grant to study percussion and dance in Ghana for 3 weeks this summer and will teach this music to my students this fall.
My students are relying on donors like you to provide them with the traditional West African instruments they need to perform this beautiful art form! My students will play music, sing, and dance for the community and at school functions. Thank you!
