It takes a village to polish a gem--please help these aspiring scholars.
My students will be first generation college students--the first in their families to go to college. Many of them of come from underrepresented demographic groups, low income families, and some are immigrants.
My students are juniors in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program.
Through this program we identify promising youngsters who are first-generation college students, low income, from under-represented demographic groups or immigrants. Most of them have been in the program since 9th grade at our urban high school. As juniors, they are now required to be in advanced courses through our school's Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs.
This is a great group of young scholars and I have had the pleasure of being their AVID teacher since ninth grade.
