Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Acids and bases are all around us. In middle school, students learn about lemon juice and lye. They may even test them with litmus paper and learn about the pH scale. In high school, it's all about the concentration of H+ and OH- ions. To get to this next level, you need the right equipment.

About 50% of my students are Hispanic; 45% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Determined to overcome their challenges and go on to college, they are extremely hard-working and determined. Our school does a great job promoting a culture of college-readiness. The science department does its part by offering a rigorous and relevant curriculum to help prepare students for what comes next.

My Project

I have 38 students in each classroom and very limited supplies. Each year, I spend about $1000 of my own money on lab supplies and equipment. I've been wanting to buy pH meters for a few years, but they are too expensive for me to purchase on my own. With the severe budget cuts my district has experienced over the past few years, it can barely afford paper, much less technology such as this for a chemistry classroom. However, this is exactly the kind of technology students need to help them understand advanced concepts in science and gain the confidence necessary to succeed in college. With equipment to actually measure pH as opposed to just being able to tell if a solution is acidic or basic, students will be able to quantitatively compare various solutions, conduct neutralization reactions, experiment with acid-base titrations, etc.

My students and I would be very grateful if you would support this project.

Money won't eliminate all the challenges in public education, but with a well-equipped chemistry lab, we might just help inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers!
