My Students

If only we could understand and sympathize with one another, wouldn't that change some things in the world?

My students are phenomenal.

While they come from various backgrounds with the problems that many urban students face, they continue to surprise me with their compassion and willingness to learn about others plights. It's important that they engage with and in the problems of others, if only to make them realize that everyone struggles...and that there is hope!

My Project

I'm requesting a class set (30 copies) of the book A Step From Heaven. This book marks the cultural changes that occur when a young Asian girl comes to America. Think of it like Amy Tan but with a little less humor and more gravitas. The book will be a part of an identity unit that helps students understand their own identities, how they're shaped and formed, as well as those of others (and the struggle we all share as we attempt to fit in).

This project is important as it will aid my students in reading comprehension while also engaging them in understanding others and hopefully sympathizing in the plight that others have in fitting in with cultures that are unlike (or seem to be unlike) their own.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
