Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school can't afford to provide students with an incredible marine science field trip that costs almost $1,000. However, I believe that my students deserve the opportunity to go on a field trip to the Marine Mammal Center, and to see the career options that are possible for each of them.
My students are thoughtful 16-19 year-olds who, for a variety of reasons, were not successful at the previous high school(s) that they attended.
They came to our continuation high school because they were behind in credits and many were at high risk of dropping out of school. My students include students who have learned English as a second language and who have learning disabilities. They are wonderful human beings who sometimes don't realize how brilliant they actually are, and really thrive when given the opportunity. Many of my students love science and animals, but may not realize that they could work as a marine biologist or in a related field.
My Project
I want to take my students on a field trip to the Marine Mammal Center's Research Discovery Day. The Marine Mammal Center rescues, and when possible, rehabilitates and releases animals along 600 miles of the California coast. We will take a tour of this amazing, environmentally-conscious facility, and students will participate in research stations that include skull morphology, telemetry, radiology, hematology, and parasitology. We will learn about how the center operates and how staff and volunteers take care of the marine mammals.
Thanks to donors like you, I was able to take my students on this field trip last year. The Marine Mammal Center has generously awarded us a scholarship for the bulk of the cost of the field trip itself (for the second year in a row!). What we need from you is the transportation to get us to and from the beautiful Marin Headlands where the field trip is located.
I believe that my students deserve the highest quality education that I can offer them, and this is one of those amazing opportunities that I want to provide for them.
Will you help me to provide my students with this excellent opportunity to see the work of the Marine Mammal Center, while at the same time opening doors to their own futures?
