Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at my school love to sing, dance, play instruments, and experience music! I am asking for a projector so that students can view song lyrics and see pictures and videos in music class.
My students are a diverse bunch of creative, enthusiastic learners.
The majority of our students are Hispanic or African-American. Many of them face economic challenges: 85% come from low-income households. Unfortunately, our school does not have the resources to purchase a projector for the music program.
My Project
I currently use 24x36" tagboard sheets to make lyrics charts for new songs that we learn. This process is time-consuming and the charts are still difficult for many students to see (especially those that need glasses but don't have them). With a digital projector, I would be able to use PowerPoint to display these materials more clearly. Having a projector also opens up possibilities for viewing images and videos related to music. Imagine if during our weekly "instrument of the week" exploration, students could watch a Youtube clip of a person playing the violin, timpani, or Native American flute!
Finally, a digital projector creates additional possibilities for exploration. There are many excellent educational music-related websites, DVDs, and other multimedia products that are not available to us yet. With a projector, students would have the opportunity to experience these with their class.
In music class, we work on all kinds of cross-curricular skills: not just singing and playing instruments, but also reading, math, social studies, and science.
Please help support music in public schools by enriching our students' music opportunities and donating to this project!
