A Little Of This, A Little Of That:: Student Requests!

My students need a new pencil sharpener, pocket folders, erasers, dry erase markers, and highlighters to replace supplies that wear out with our intense use.

I teach a fantastic and ethnically diverse group of fifth graders in an extremely impoverished inner-city school. For my students, school is the safety net of their daily lives, especially those that are homeless or live in daily fear of losing their family home due to the severe economic depression of our region of Michigan. Life is tough, but these kids survive with such amazing strength and truly love school.

"A GOOD pencil sharpener!" "New folders!" "Erasers" "Dry erase markers!" "Highlighters!" These were the loud and boisterous answers I was bombarded with when I asked my students what we needed for our classroom. They are right, they do really need these supplies, but there is no money for them in our school budget.

We will use these supplies everyday. These supplies are essential needs that some students simply do not have and their parents cannot afford. They are especially insistent about a new pencil sharpener, because I purchased a new pencil sharpener for $60 dollars in August and it doesn't work well and you have to unplug it to get it to turn off. Needless to say, it is not convenient to use! It is not easy to teach 5th grade without a way to keep the pencils sharpened.

My students are counting on you!! Your donation will make it possible for my students to have the supplies they need to be prepared for school.
