Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students need good books to turn them back onto reading! They have terrible vocabularies and the only way to improve is to read challenging materials.
Our students come from multi-ethnic, working class families.
The majority of our students are eligible for the free or reduced price lunch program. We are a title IV school with little to zero funding for books. My students are searching for education to enlighten and enliven them and to prepare them for college.
My Project
How better to bring the Vietnam War alive, than with the book "The Things They Carried"? It's such a beautifully written book full of just the right horror and pathos to get the kids into the complexities of this time period and have them look at the consequences of war both in foreign countries and at home.
We will be doing lots of writing and poetry to supplement this novel.
I hope after reading this book, my students will choose peace and remember the war our country is fighting right now.
