Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want my students to understand that literacy and visual arts are partners in success. This understanding can only come from student interaction with books within the art room such as "Action Jackson", "The Noisy Paintbox", and the many more books requested through this project.
Artists at my school are very lucky to call our nation's Capitol their home!
My young artists range in age from grades Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. As a bilingual school, many artists are English Language Learners(ELL) and rely upon courses such as visual arts to help them make connections across languages.
The artists at my school are all energetic, innovative, and passionate about enhancing their knowledge and learning through the visual arts and literacy development.
My Project
The opportunities these books will provide for my students are ENDLESS! Here are a few direct projects which students will experience from these books: Fifth and Fourth Grade artists will explore the theme of architecture through books "Iggy Pack Architect" and "Hundertwasser: Create Your Own City" in order to design and build their own piece of architecture.
Second Grade artists will experience the connection between movement and mark making by reading "Action Jackson" and then painting in the splattering style of Jackson Pollock! Kindergarten artists will explore and learn about primary and secondary colors by reading stories such as "The Noisy Paintbox". Artists will then have the opportunity to mix secondary colors to create an abstract work of art.
Pre-K artists will learn colors through books such as " Monsters Love Colors" and "Little Blue and Little Yellow". Students will use books like " Wild About Shapes" to learn to draw people, and places using shapes!
The books requested through this project will not only provide students with larger, more creative, and expressive projects to complete during the visual arts class, but will also enhance students literacy skills.
This funding request for books will act as a bridge between the visual arts and literacy. Artists at my school will learn to view books as more than just something they read in a general education room, but as a source of inspiration, and encouragement within the art room.
