My Students

Help children's voices be heard and musical talents shine! Right now, our school only has an old piano that hasn’t been tuned in years. It would be costly to get the piano tuned a few times a year, so we would like to be able to get an electric keyboard to help in music class and for singing.

I am the music teacher of 164 Kindergarten through 8th grade students.

About 96 percent are African-American, two percent are Hispanic or Latino, and two percent other. Over 60 percent receive special education services and about 75 percent come from low-income families. Our school addresses the needs of students with learning differences by providing creative learning environments. We focus on developing the whole child intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. These children are fantastically clever, artistically skillful, and talented. I describe them as vocal powerhouses. I am proud to be their teacher and despite their challenges, they soar above and beyond. They are filled with enthusiasm and are eager to learn and express themselves through music. One of my 5th graders is such a student who captures the spirit of what it is to be a vocalist. He lives for music and strives to improve. Yet so far he hasn't been able to hear in-tune accompaniment while he sings.

My Project

Can you imagine a music class without being able to hear what notes are supposed to sound like? With your help, students will get the opportunity to learn the foundations of music theory and learn how to sing on their own and in a group while hearing correct pitches on the keyboard. I would use the keyboard every day in music class as students learn everything from rhythms to music notation to how to sing a varied repertoire. Besides growing musically, our students could grow so much more personally. Many of my students have different learning styles and music brings out a creative side in students. For some, music and singing are effective ways of expressing themselves.

With your help, this keyboard will not only make a difference in developing musical and vocal skills, but this will also help students with self-esteem, and can help in other areas of their schoolwork, too.

I would like to start an instrumental program at this school and this electric keyboard would help be a foundation for such a program. Your support would help unleash these students’ talents and make music alive in this school for years. Thank you for helping build a better future.
