A Hope in the Unseen - 2012

My students need 25 copies of A Hope in the Unseen for a project in the Spring semester. This book will challenge the upper level students.

My Students

I teach students who want to attend Ivy League universities.

Unfortunately, they come from under-resourced communities.

They attend an inner-city charter school, and most come from poor and working-class neighborhoods. Their lack of financial resources has not dampened their ambitions or performance, however. I teach 8th grade, and most of the students read at the 8th grade level. Some read 2-5 grade levels above the 8th grade, and they need to be challenged further.

My Project

This book will challenge the upper level students. We plan to give it to our top performers as an advanced assignment. The book tracks a high school student named Cedric who comes from a poor neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Cedric struggles through a failing high school to earn a spot at Brown University. We hope Cedric's story will inspire our students. They will read about a person who came from a neighborhood like theirs and who persevered and earned a spot at one of the world's best universities.

We assigned this book to our highest achieving students last year, and they benefited marvelously from reading it.

We want this year's scholars to have the same enriching experience.
