My Students

Have you ever wanted something so much for those you love, but just couldn't seem to afford it? This is how I feel every year when I roll out my dollar store carpet in my classroom. One wasn't big enough for all the children to fit on so another teacher gave me one, too!

I have some of the most diverse children in our area.

Some of my children come from very good homes, while others struggle to make it every day. I have been at this school for 14 years and have had the pleasure of teaching some of the most loving children no matter what their background is. Each one is like a special part of my own family. Our school doesn't qualify for Title I funds, so we really have to make it on our own. We are known as a "good" school, but the basic funds that we receive each year barely purchase the necessities.

My Project

I have always wanted to have a carpet that is large enough for all my children to fit on during class meetings. We like to sit in a circle because it is easier to see each other when we are conversing, and to see the book when I'm reading. I haven't been able to afford a large carpet, but I do have a dollar store remnant that I got a few years ago. I was able to acquire a smaller piece of carpet from another teacher a couple years ago so together they make up my meeting area. The children hardly use their desks because they do everything on that carpet. They read, they meet in math groups, they even sit on the carpet during writing time. The iPod is needed because we use music and audio a lot in the classroom. We have also begun to create our own book talk videos to share with our friends. Having an iPod to record our videos would be wonderful! We just had a Smart Board installed in the room, and the use of the iPod with the Smart Board will be an extra bonus.

I have thought long and hard about this project and what to ask for.

I have been teaching for 19 years and haven't asked many people for much. I decided on the carpet because both of my current rugs are falling apart. They weren't made for such high traffic volume. I selected the iPod because downloading music and educational videos is much easier than buying CD's. Also, the students just love to watch themselves as they are recording. Thank you for supporting teachers! We could really use it.
