A Classroom Full of Butterflies

My students need a Butterflies in the Classroom Kit and 26 science journals to learn and make observations about the life cycle of butterflies.

My Students

To quote a Chinese Proverb, "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand". Children learn by doing. In order to learn about life cycles, children can't just read about them or look at pictures. They must be actively involved and make real life observations.

I teach second grade at a primary school in a rural community.

I LOVE my students! They are so excited to learn new things. They bring such joy to my life. I want to be able to provide them with all of the resources they need to be successful and productive members of society. Because we are located in a rural community, we have very limited funding. We deserve the same advantages as schools located in wealthy suburbs. My students would really enjoy and benefit from having more science materials, especially ones that help them learn more about the environment.

My Project

When teaching about butterflies in the past I would usually get one container that had 3-5 caterpillars inside. The class would crowd around it to watch the changes that were taking place. This project will allow each of my students to have their own container with their own caterpillar inside. They will be able to make better observations and really learn about the changes that are taking place. They will each have a science journal where they can record their observations each day until the caterpillar makes its change into a butterfly. We will also discuss how butterflies are important to the environment as well as how they live in their habitat.

Learning about life cycles is so much fun!

Students really get into it and learn a lot. This year I want to add something a little extra to our unit about life cycles. I want each of my students to have their own science journal and caterpillar so they can get an up close and personal look at this natural phenomenon.
