My students need school supplies such as pens, pencil, notebooks, and much more. They are reeling from Hurricane Sandy and DESPERATELY need the basics to return to school.
I am sure you have seen the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. Many of our students are displaced, living in shelters, or at friends homes after losing everything to flood, fire, lack of power, or unfortunate looting. We are trying anything we can to help return normalcy to their lives.
Our school is a wonderful mix of quirky characters from all over Brooklyn.
Generally our students proudly live in high poverty neighborhoods. Problem is that some of the neighborhoods have literally been washed away. We are a 6-12 fully inclusive public secondary school in Bensonhurst with a diverse population. Our students genuinely care about each other and their communities. To say they are reeling right now would be an understatement.
My Project
These basic resources will allow our students to return to school with the basic dignity they need to participate in the daily functions of scholastic life. It may seem pathetic that we are asking for pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, binders, paper, and the like, but we desperately want to help our students.
Our worst fear as educators is that students will opt not to return to school because they lack basic school supplies.
We are working to secure clothing, basic food, and toiletries for our students and their families who aren't really sure where they will be living in the near future.
