7R's: FiRst GRadeRs ReseaRch a Topic, Then WRite CReatively!
My students need non-fiction, leveled readers to become young, independent researchers on a topic of THEIR choice and then write in a variety of genres.
Imagine you are six years old. You have chosen to research owls. Now you are not at the same reading level as your best friend so you can not read their book, and the book that you can read is in the hands of your other best friend. Grrrr! You just need your OWN book about owls!
We are twenty-two very inquisitive, enthusiastic first grade researchers.
We live amongst corn fields, soy bean fields and wind turbines in Illinois.
Together we have researched corn, wind turbines, traditions from around the world, and a host of well known people!
Now we get to choose our own individual research topic on a living thing! The thing is we all have different reading abilities.
What we have in common: We ALL love to read and write!
Once we have taken notes from our books, we get to write creatively to share our research. We are going to create informational posters, write poetry, construct mini-books and BIG books, make mobiles to hang from our classroom ceiling and, well, as far as writing... the sky is the limit!
My Project
I am requesting non-fiction, leveled readers for learning about living things. My students will choose their individual research topic which will help maintain their level of interest over the course of several weeks. They will work collaboratively and offer support and encourage each other while compiling their research.
The problem is we just do not have sufficient books that meet my students' individual reading abilities.
While there are numerous non-fiction books with colorful pictures, text boxes, and an array of factual information, the text is often over-whelming to many of my students. Fortunately, more non-fiction books are making their way into our classroom library. Sadly, we have few appropriate books and the cost of purchasing good books is expensive.
A wide variety of leveled readers will assure my students confidence in their reading ability and increase their awareness of living things.
They need to be able to read appropriate texts that they are able to read independently.
Please consider contributing to this project so that my students will be able to read texts that meet their individual needs. Reading and writing work as one!
Please help promote my students individual needs and in turn become future researchers of tomorrow.
