5th-Grade Library for Social Justice and Social Action
My students need a variety of texts that focus on multiple perspectives to understand a variety of social issues. Understanding will lead to motivated social action and change.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Nelson Mandela.
I give my students the opportunity to "practice" that change in my classroom... through social action cycles, through exposing them to multiple perspectives and building their critical thinking skills.
I work for the Department of Education in the City of New York as a general education teacher in Brooklyn, New York.
I teach upper elementary boys and girls in an Integrated-Co-teaching (ICT) setting with 60% general education students and 40% special education students. I am responsible for teaching literacy, mathematics, and social studies curriculum. My teaching interests are humane education, differentiated instruction, experiential learning, social justice, and social/emotional learning.
My Project
This social action library will expose students to a variety of relevant social issues, including animal welfare, bullying and cliques, poverty, acceptance/celebrating diversity, environmental stewardship, use of technology, war, and immigration. Books focus on developing character, empathy, flexibility, resiliency, courage, civic responsibility and service.
In a time when curriculum are shifting for to stress "global competitiveness and college and career readiness," my social action library will help enrich curriculum, building well-rounded citizens-in-training who can practice aligning their actions with their values.
