4K Bilingual Fun With Math

My students need leveled math materials to enable differentiation for learning styles and math abilities, for example sequencing puzzles, addition games, and foam dice.

My Students

Our four-year-old students are spending their school day learning while playing. Math instruction happens with teacher support while children choose their activities and through small-group math focused teacher-led activities.

My students are all from Spanish-speaking homes.

For most, this is their first school experience. Children are taught in Spanish so that their first learning is done in the language in which they are most comfortable. While English is used somewhat, the academic concepts are taught in Spanish. Our students are primarily from low-income families in which parents work often more than one job. As well, this is for many families their first contact with school. We support parents navigating through the school culture as well as assist in filling out school paperwork.

My Project

Once we get to know our students and their varying levels of math abilities, we differentiate instruction. With more manipulatives, different math activities can be set up to scaffold children at their varying levels. These materials will be used during choice time in the room as well as during teacher-led math activities. We are hoping to use the number sequencing puzzles to help children with both counting and number identification. The crocodile game with the frog manipulatives will help children with numbers concepts of more, less, and equal as well as number identification and one-to-one correspondence. Our four-year-old students also love playing with dice. More larger foam dice will help us with our active numeracy games such as doing the quantity of an exercise that the die says.

All children will make advancements in their math ability when I have materials to meet all their individual needs.

In a four-year-old kindergarten, we have a play based curriculum. All of these manipulatives are fun and engaging for young children.
