My goal each school year is to create a classroom full of readers. "There is no such thing as a child who hates to read, but children who have not yet found the right book" (Frank Serafini). My project will allow our classroom library to be organized by genre so that perfect book can be found.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds, but all still love the challenge of learning new things.
Our school is a upper elementary building of grades 3-5, with over 50% of students at-risk. However, this does not diminish their determination to succeed and desire to learn and achieve. Academic success can open new doors to their future.
My Project
My students need a classroom reading area which includes a rug, 3 fun bungee chairs and 54 book baskets to create a genre-centered library. Each school year, I try to create a classroom that is warm and welcoming. This year my project goal is to create a student-centered classroom library and reading corner. By adding the bright/fun carpet and bungee chairs, the reading corner will be welcoming for students to relax and read during their independent reading time. The book baskets will allow set up in the classroom for a genre-based library. My hope is that my reluctant readers will find a genre that entices them to keep reading and explore new worlds and adventures.
This project's success will provide our classroom with an organized library, a welcoming reading corner and will set the stage for independent and partner readers to dive into a good book and enjoy reading.
It is a teacher's dream to have a classroom of excited readers who can't wait for reading time.
