My students have lots of opportunities to create art using traditional methods. In my social studies classes we have made prints, paintings, and even pen and ink drawings. So much art, design and engineering now is done by computer, they need that opportunity too.
My students are amazing!
We live in an area of high poverty with over 90% of my students qualifying for free and reduced lunches. We are also over 60% minority and include students from over a dozen different countries.
This year my students have made some amazing art in my social studies class to represent their learning. They love to explore different ways that aren't traditionally used to show learning.
My Project
My students will use the MakerBot 3D printer to create objects that represent their learning. They will work in small groups throughout the year to design an object that represents what they are learning.
For example, while studying Texas independence from Mexico they could create a representation of the Alamo or a Grizzly Bear for the Corps of Discovery. The student can create a 'museum of artifacts' throughout the year to showcase the learning that has taken place.
Creating digital content is wonderful.
Students can create things that will last virtually forever using the Internet through our computers. This isn't enough. My students desire to create things they can put their hands on and show to others. The pride of exhibiting created work in our community is strong, unfortunately online work is just not that accessible. This will give my students the opportunity to create something digitally that can be exhibited with pride.
