Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Gabe, Karan, Emily and Max are very competitive group leaders. They motivate the students around them, and are constantly challenging me as an educator. It is definitively a very special group of students. It was exciting just seeing their passion and energy when they were brainstorming ideas.

Students were given the opportunity to brainstorm ideas as a class. Somehow, all the leaders ended up talking to each other and had the idea of building something so they can compete against each other. This is a very competitive group of learners, challenges were made and challenges were accepted.

This project will allow students to apply the math concepts that they learn in class in a real world situation. Making and presenting a scale model to a vendor is no easy task. They will need to show mastery of proportions and scale, just to name a few. They will have to learn how to communicate and work as a group in order to meet certain guidelines and time deadlines. There will be plenty of opportunities to show leadership skills. Overall, their project idea looks like a very promising and exciting experience.

In Their Own Words

Engineers and architects normally have to present a model of a building or structure to their clients for approval before spending millions of dollars. Maybe, we could do something similar where we have to present something that matches what we learn in class. We know that we will be learning about area, volume, scale and percents. We could be graded on those when we present our product.

We will make sure to promote the project using social media. The project will help our math classroom, but it will also help us print parts for our robotics class and Robotics Club. So we are helping more than one classroom. We will make sure to come up with a challenging and fun math project to get everyone excited about learning math. We talked to other group leaders and we really want to compete against each other. We can even get a trophy for the winning team.

We just got a new 3D printer, but we don't have filament to print with. This project will solve that. The reason this project is important is so we can experience a real world challenge and not always working with the textbook.
