My Students

I gravitate to quiet and calm environments, so it's a surprise to me that I am happiest among my 7th grade students who are busy, boisterous, chatty and curious. Our classroom is a computer lab with 37 stations, three printers, 5,000 Legos and piles of parts we use in our explorations! It is fun!

Seventh grade is an ideal time to introduce computer science and the "maker" movement to students.

They have enough maturity and background knowledge to handle more advanced projects and they are curious about what makes their digital world work. Some of the comments I have heard from my students when we tackle the binary number system or coding: "This is so cool!" "I never thought I'd be able to do something like this." "Are we coding again today? Good!" They respond with earnest effort to new challenges - it's a privilege to work with this age group, in this wonderful school, and in a community where education is valued and the educators respected!

My Project

We are going to learn, together, about the engineering process. Imagining, designing, refining and producing are all on the agenda. My role will be to channel all their energy and ideas so that everyone will have a chance to create and hold in their hands something they designed. My students need a 3D printer and filament to experience the engineering and production process.

This 3-D printer will give us an opportunity to experience the joys and frustrations of creation, and bring a cutting-edge piece of equipment to our lab!

More importantly, the 700 students I work with will have an authentic STEM experience that will help awaken interests and curiosities that will influence their future.
