My Students

When I was in elementary school I struggled in math, but only because I struggled in reading also. I was fine with figuring stuff out, but I simply couldn't read all the story problems. In an effort to combat this problem for my own students, we're using technology to show what we've learned.

MY class is made of 22 students from varying socio-economic statuses.

Several of the students have special needs in the area of literacy or just simply struggle with the topic. They work hard and are intrinsically motivated to learn, and they recognize the value in being able to show what they know in several ways.

My Project

Currently students have a Montessori-esque model for doing math. They meet in a small group with a teacher to get the new lesson, but spend the rest of their time self-selecting activities that appeal to their learning style. Each activity reinforces and hones the same skills, but prevents boredom and increases motivation by being specially suited to that student's strengths. Many of the activities rely on taking out the writing element, so that we can actually measure what math the student knows. These tools would allow more students access to the tools they need to provide paper-less, writing-less evidence of their learning. Presently they have to wait and wait for the one voice recorder in our room when recording an explanation or method. The iPod would allow them more opportunity to record, which would drastically increase their instructional time and reduce their waiting time.

Every student deserves a chance to be successful as often as possible.

No student need be diagnosed as a math struggler when their only downfall is the reading and writing associated with math. The more opportunities we give children to express their learning in multiple ways, the more versatile a workforce we will have when they are adults. We need a critically-thinking, flexibly-thinking workforce in the 21st century.
